South Africa: maths curriculum

CAPS curriculum

The CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) replaces the current NCS curriculum. It is a simplified curriculum and give a week by week planning for teachers to follow. The FET (grade 10 to 12) Mathematics curriculum changed substantially. The optional paper 3 is now integrated into papers 1 and 2 and is therefore compulsory. The terminology Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards has gone and the Numeracy in grades R to 3 is now again called Mathematics.

The CAPS will be implemented in phases:

  • 2012: Grades R-3 and Grade 10

  • 2013: Grades 4-9 and Grade 11

  • 2014: Grade 12

The mathematics curriculum is defined in terms of four learning outcomes.

  • LO 1: Number and Number Relationships;

  • LO 2: Functions and Algebra;

  • LO 3: Space, Shape and Measurement, and

  • LO 4: Data Handling and  Probability.

As all learners need to choose at the end of grade seven between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy. It is compulsory two do one of these two subjects in grade 10 to 12.
